she may recover with time and physiotherapy. what happened is that the blood supply to part of the brain was impaired and so part of the brain died and another part stopped functioning but can be revivied with quick intervention.

now she will re gain part of the lost functions because after a stroke, edema of the brain develops and is maximal a couple of days after the onset of stroke, this edema will cause even more functional loss but it is reversible, with time (weeks) the edema subsides and the neurons return to normal function. anyway, she still has a dead part of the brain but other parts of the brain can take the function of the dead tissue and so she may regain more functions and that's done by physiotherapy. rehabilitaion is very important for her.

no one can diagnose a stroke from a missed call, take it easy on yourself, there was nothing you could do.

sorry for what happened

A lot will depend on her age and history. It is possible to make significant progress after a stroke though it take a lot of hard work and a fair amount of time up to couple of years maybe to see maximum potential.

During this time it can be very frustrating for both your sister and all around her as she tries to talk and is misunderstood. Depression is also something to be aware of.

Progress is slow. A good idea is to video her every once in a while so that in times of despair she can look back on the progress she has made.

She will need determination and perseverance and all the support she can get.

She'll need time to grieve for what she had and lost.

All you can do is be there for her and encourage her, but also understand her frustrations and allow her to express them.

There may be times when she becomes angry, sometimes changes in the brain can cause this but also the situation she is in will cause it.

Make sure you have a rota and that everyone gets time to rest as the time ahead will be very demanding.

Most of all, please don't feel guilty, you didn't know she was going to have a stroke and you are there for her now.

Lots of best wishes.

Brain cells 'die' beginning 15 minutes after being deprived of oxygen and yes the 3 to 6 hour 'window' is critical for INTER VENTION not outcome. This means that a medication to dissolve blood clots works best in this window although the likelihood of recovery is not influenced by time - so have faith. A critical factor is the age of your sister, the presence of a Physiatrist in her care, the experience of the physical therapist, and (sad to say) her insurance. My wife died in 1995 after a stroke. The insurance company refused to pay for her care.

Because of the time frame involved, chances are less that she will regain full function. Though, it is not impossible, statistics have indicated it to be improbable. But never give up hope. With very hard work and determination, many stroke sufferers have made remarkable recoveries which have astonished doctors and families.
