Courses like Eye Q. Do they work or are they scams? Would they help someone with difficulty reading? If they do work, which ones are the best?

Yes, but in a very limited way.
I would not say they are worth the money they charge.
Just try getting hold of a good book on this subject. Rest all is practice.

I read at a speed of 2650 words pr min when I am relaxing and 4330 (which is slow by most standards) when I am doing research. I learned to speed read when I was very very young. Around the age of 7 -8 (I am 65 now) There are programs on the web and all you have to do is go to goggle and do a search. However, I have to warn you. If you are serious then it is going to take practice, practice, and more practice. and then practice some more. I didn't have TV when I was a kid, so books and radio was the only type of entertainment that I had. Good-Luck
