No you don't need a credit card, but you will be asked to pay for each night of stay in advance as well as putting down a deposit of approx. 100$ a night that is refunded upon checkout. (amount depending on hotel policy)

Sometimes you can get around placing the deposit by asking front desk to remove items that you can purchase from the room or by refusing the key to the minibar (also depending on the set up of the hotel). They will also make a note on your file and you will not be able to make outside calls from your room, order movies, etc. Payphones are usually available in the lobby though.

Depends on the hotel but you can use a debit card like mentioned above. Hotels want a valid credit card since it is a more guaranteed source of payment. It is also something they can hold onto in case they need to do anything to the room (such as, repairs) and not have to try and locate you. They have fewer worries about payment since they can access your card and no worries about you running out without paying. If you cancel the card, they still have an ability to track you, bill you or drag you to court.

Most first class hotels want to keep your open card on file to prevent you from charging phone calls and not paying. If there is no phone you might get in by paying cash in advance but would be looked at like a criminal.

Nobody trust anybody that does not have a credit card. Sad note on life.

It depends on what type of Hotel/Motel/Inn you have in mind. Usually they require a credit card to register/put the room on hold for you like when traveling. It varies though.

No. Most all hotels accept cash. They will however require payment in full at time of check in. When making a reservation in advance you can use your ATM/bank card. You know the Visa card that's really your bank card.
