I enlisted in the Australian Army Reserve (like the Territorial Army in the UK, or National Guard in the US) as a personal challenge. To see if I could do the training. To learn something new in a different and disciplined environment.

Other people I know have joined as it provides a potentially exciting and varied job in many different places. It is also an honourable form of service to a nation and the people of a nation. It also provides good career and training opportunities for people who may have had limited options in other ways.

I believed/believe in a meaningful contribution to the health of the body politic. Many of my friends had enlisted and we all figured on covering each others backs. The way I was raised taught me that I owed a debt to my country and as such, if the age limits were to be raised, I would gladly go again.

Well, just google "Senator Kerry remarks military" and you can find the most derisive answers. Or, you may choose to believe that the concept of serving one's country is not totally dead and that some people actually wish to contribute to something larger than themselves. Or, possibly, it could be that the numerous education incentives the military offers is appealing for those who would not otherwise be able to afford to continue formal education.

Some men come from backgrounds that aren't pretty, and they need to get away. Others have always had a dream of fighting, and others want the free college.

There would indeed be honour if your country was in any danger, but just to pick fights with small with countries with small military capabilities, while you have the most powerful force the world has ever known, doesn't seem very honourable to me. Especially since you got your *** kicked in Vietnam and you have the Iraqis wanting you out of their country. The US is now looked upon as the new USSR by the vast majority of the world.

Duty, Honor, Country.

Military service is considered by many to be their duty, an honorable duty to serve and sacrifice to protect their fellow citizens and their country.

In the US, the average enlistee is from a higher socio-economic background and has higher academic achievement than his peers.

There are so many reasons: Help with college, see the world, duty to oneself and country, protect those you love. My husband told me that he wanted to make sure that he could take care of me and our daughter. There are so many reasons. It just depends on who you ask.

I can tell you why I joined the Marines. For one I believe that history is in the making and I want to be a part of it. Second to do my part on the war. Third because I love the Marine Corps.
