Not used to it.

Let him wear the lead around the house to get used to it and realize its not going to hurt him.

When starting a pup out on a lead the first day I just connect it to the collar for about 15 minutes and let him drag it around. Then I increase it 5 minutes each day for a total of 4 days. By day 4 the pup is used to it being there. Then I take hold of it for small periods of time each day ending the session leading it around and praising the dog. By the end of the week the dog has no fear and understands you are leading it. That is when correct lead behavior is started. Lots of praise and rewards!

Obviously the dog has a fear of the lead. Time and patients will change that. Above all do not try and force the dog to get use to it by pulling it by the lead and never use the lead as a disciplinary tool. Use reassuring words and treats when placing the lead on and remove it after a short period of time (one minute or so). Try increasing the length of time slowly again with words of comfort and praise and treats. The dog must understand that the lead is not for punishment and that it will not hurt him. After the dog gets accustom to having the lead on then you can try walking him/her with it. Again avoid pulling or forcing the dog to move.
Time and patients.

Good luck!

Put a light weight collar on him and a small leash (also light weight) and let him walk around the room with it on to become accustomed to the leash. Watch that he doesn't get tangled up in something (furniture legs etc). He will learn that the leash is not something to be afraid of. Take him out in the yard and do the same thing. After a few days of this, take him out and try to take him for a walk. Hold the leash VERY loosely in your hand and see if he will walk on it for you. It takes time and patience to teach a puppy how to do things. You have time and patience. Good luck.

you should of put the lead on him when he was younger but the best thing you can do when he is in the house and you are there put the lead on him and let him drag it around the floor and he will get use to the weight of the lead and pick it up and walk around with him in the house then drop it down and leave him walk around for a while he will get use to it but don't leave it on him in the house if you are not watching him good luck

Our pup just started walking on the lead and he did the same thing at first, we just had to persevere, I suppose they don't really know what's happening and they can get frightened by noise and people and stuff, we just had to coax him along gently and keep stopping to pet him and reassure him. He was fine once he got used to it and he loves going out now. How long has he been doing it though? What type of dog is he because some breeds are 'criers'!

being on a lead is a strange experience for puppies the important thing is not to tell him off, after all he is doing nothing wrong, patience is wot is needed, you shouldkeep putting his lead on him when he is indoors, give him a treat, take he lead off,put it back on and again treat, take the lead off and then repeat the process later on in the day,it may take a few days but once he sees that having his lead on is fun you should see some progress good luck xx

I have a puppy who is 7 months old. He did exactly the same thing. Have you tried walking him around the house? Sometimes young dogs can feel cold outside and this will also prevent them from walking.

He may be fearful of the surroundings - practice with him in the house first. Try to get his interest to go to certain areas and gradually, if you have a yard, go there next.

Be patient. Let him make the first steps. Unusual timidness in pets is not a good behavior trait - these animals can end up being fear biters, etc. If this persists I would seek the help of a professional trainer.

Hi, im not sure why, but my border collie did exactly the same as a pup, what kind of lead are you using? what we did was change his lead to a training lead, that goes round the front legs and accross the chest, this seemed to work and he was much more confident, and walked great then, hth
