My kids are 6 and 7, and they want Game Boys for Christmas. I have strong objections personally, as does my ex-wife, but they are VERY responsible kids, and would stick to the limits and terms of use set by their parents as far as 'time per day' allotted for gaming. What do the experts think about 'limited' gaming for kids? What are the more reccommended 'educational' games for Game Boy? Any help would be appreciated: Thanks!

My son got a Gameboy from his Grandma last year for Christmas, right before he turned 7 years old.

We try to control the amount of time he is allowed to use it. His use of it also hinges on his behavior. Good, respectful and responsible behavior earns him time with his games. Being a stubborn pain in the butt means mom and dad get to keep the Gameboy put away somewhere he can't have it.

He has a chess/checkers/backgammon game that we do like to see him play as it makes him think. His other games for the Gameboy are really just for fun. I know they do make some other Sudoku and puzzle type games, which we may be looking into for the holidays this year.

If you really want educational games, I'd consider the Leap Frog Leapster system, which is what we are giving our almost 6 year old for Christmas this year. All the games for that one are good learning games.

Why would you go against your strong objections? My wife has allowed video games for our kids and she regrets it. If you do not want video games for your children, be the parent and put your foot down. I'd also encourage you to substitue that with something else. Be prepared to be involved and spend time with your kids where they'd be otherwise entertaining themselves. Play board games with them, read books together, walk and play sports outside. If you want educational technology for your kids, buy them a computer to share or some cheap laptops from eBay and get Headstart brand other educational software, that will help them learn to read and type, get a real world device, a computer.

Gameboys huh? Well, your kid will get teased when the bullies start to see it and realize that it's about 10 years outdated.
