Semiconductors are most commonly used in the production of microchips. Most microchips are built on a silicon semi-conductor base.

The reason semi-conductors are used so widely is because their properties can be changed by adding impurities ("doping") to the raw form.

I hope this helps! Much more information can be found at my source..

the basis of all transistors, IC's, computer chips.

a semi-conductor is a conductor which can be controlled.
at it's simplest you have a 'p' type material and an 'n' type material and put them together. At the junction between the 2 materials you have a natural region of high resistance. However, if you apply a current in one direction, the high resistance region gets smaller and resistance goes down.it becomes a good conductor.

if you apply the current in the opposite direction, the high resistance region gets larger and the resistance will become higher, and little current will be able to flow.

current can only flow in one direction through this kind of device

this is the basis of a diode, the simplest kind of electronic semiconductor device

Transistors are semi-conductors, which means they don't conduct electricity until a voltage is applied to the gate. Also diodes, light-emitting-diodes, and silicon-controlled-rectifiers are semi-conductors.

There are millions of semi-conductors in the processor you used to type your question.

Semi-conductors are used for their special conducting properties that are in-between of conductors and insulators, in making of electronic devices like diodes and transistors, and of course, integrated electronics (IC) chips.

A semiconductor plays an important role in electronics.. It is used in diodes, which is the most important component in any circuit...It is a basic requirement in any circuit..The next level of components- the transistors & integrated chips(which may involve diodes) also are made of semiconductors..
