I swear this is true,,,i heard a loud bang one day and didnt know where it came from,,i went down into the basement where we keep a supply of canned foods and such,,,,there was a horrible horrible smell. Then i opened one of the pantry doors and there was yams splashed all over and the smell was putrid, This big can of yams exploded!! After cleaning this big mess up..i wondered how dangerous this would have been if someone was nearby. Who do i report this to? And shouldnt the company be notified of this danger? ty

There is probably a phone number or an address on the can label. You should report it, and you will need the old can, because either the can or the label is marked with the lot #, which the company will need to track when/where it was produced. Unless the can was next to a heat source, there was probably bacteria trapped in the can that weren't killed by processing. They produced gas in the can, which built up until the can exploded. The real danger would have been if you had eaten the yams and gotten food poisoning, so be glad the can exploded, otherwise you might have ended up cleaning up a big mess in the bathroom! The company will probably reimburse you with a coupon.

I would take the can back to the store with an explanation of what happened. Possibly there was a malfunctioning during the canning process and many more other cans may affected especially if the yam built up gas because the cans were not properly sealed and there could also be a potential case of botulism infecting other cans that were processed during the same canning run at the plant.

Gross. You should be able to find contact information on the can, so that you can call them. I think they should definately be contacted. If the can is already thrown away, you can go to the store and write the number down from another one. Not only could this be dangerous, but it would be unusual for a canned product to spoil while it was in the can (unless it was really really really old). They need to know that something was wrong with the food if it wasn't out of date, and maybe recall. People could be eating that stuff. Yuck...I'm glad you didn't cook it!

there should be an address and even a 1-800 phone number on the side of a Bruce's can - for the customer service department at Bruce's. most products are required to post that info in case of something like this. they will help you. you will either get a refund, coupons or something.

Very possibly the can had a small unseen hole. After which the the yams began to rot causing in all probability methane gas and therefore the explosion.

Get ahold of the folk's a Bruce and let them know what happened. Sounds like a chemical reaction that finally went wrong. I'm just glad no one got hurt.
