You Westerners who think Egypt's heaven should thank goodness you don't live here! I've been here 13 years and wow!Beggars crowd every square inch, drivers would rather run you over than let you cross, there are pollution and trash and wild traffic jams everywhere, education's MISERABLE, God knows how much money goes to bribery and corruption, good-looking girls are hassled like whores (veiled and unveiled women getting their clothes torn up by sixty or seventy men made headlines last week), half the people are illiterate peasants who live in shocking poverty (per capita income is $700 a year), I can't leave Islam although we have 'freedom of religion' (ha!), the media spits out anti-Semitic propaganda, the boys I go to school with are filthy rich and shameless...I feel like crying when I get home each night, I'd rather end it all than go on living like this much longer. What on earth do you like about this place?
Tahhyaa Musr, he he.

"iam EGYPTION and Muslim , u say that half are illiterate??!!"
Sorry to say, I'm Egyptian too, and I'm officially Muslim, although I'm not proud of it. YES, about half of all Egyptians cannot read and write their own language. 44.4%, to be exact. If you look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_literacy_rate you'll see that Egypt's literacy rate is only 55.6%. AM I LYING?

"iam a pharmacist , and a Muslim wearing hi jab and conservative cloths, may be u didn't notice that type of ppl too, there are sooo many of doctors , engineering , famous writters....etc."
I HATE everything about Islam. Islam is the biggest problem in this country. It's why we don't have a secular democracy. It's why Egypt's 100,000 Jews were expelled in the 1940s. It's why Christians can't preach their religion like Muslims do, it's why Christians can't build as many churches as Muslims build mosques, it's why Christians can't run for President or Prime Minister. In 1960 Egypt was 15% Christian. Now it's between 5-10% Christian because the government has been accused of lying about the real number of Christians who live here. More and more Christians are leaving. Did you know that Naguib Mafhouz was paralyzed becase a religious Muslim stabbed him in the neck because of the way he talked about God in his books?

"and the media on the country we see it soo clearly , but because i think it shows the the truth and terrorism of the "western" rulers , u didn't like that of course!!"
The media makes Jews look like demons. I've read articles that defend Hitler, articles that say the Jews are trying to take over the world, articles that insult Jews with racial slurs and put them in political cartoons. At school we're taught that Jews are dishonest and evil and that they will always be our enemies. Sometimes I think it's a miracle that Egypt manages to stay at peace with Israel when Egyptians hate Jews so much. I only met Jews online and EVERYTHING I was taught about them turned out to be a lie. They are basically good people, and maybe if you talked to one Jew in your entire life you would have a different opinion. And if we hate America so much, why are we allied to the States, and why do we accept billions of dollars in American foreign aid?? Why is the media so dishonest and hateful?

"at least , we are more polite Mr."western", and we aren't racist like in the western countries (u didn't notice that too)that have"arabophobia" and "islamophobia", (they hate the Muslims of their own nationality) foreigners receive a good hospitalisation , but u didn't respect that!!"
Polite? I've been humiliated and insulted for years at school because of my American accent when I spoke English or because of my different way of thinking or because of my getting good grades. I don't like the American government but my American friends treated me much better than any Egyptian friend ever has. My own family has beaten me, spat in my face, thrown me out of my own house because I disagreed with them on religious matters. And maybe you didn't read what I wrote about sexual molestation of women in Cairo, and maybe you didn't read that Al Ahram article last week about women IN HIJABS like you having their clothes ripped off their bodies by Egyptian men. POLITENESS is not what I see.

Yes, SOME of them have Islamophobia because of Muslim extremists who have bombed Madrid and London and killed Theo van Gogh and tried to blow up ten British planes flying over American cities just several months ago. But despite this, Islamophobia is against the LAW. A Muslim can go to court if he's disrespected, denied a job, or mistreated because of his religion. Can a Jew in Egypt do this? Oh wait - there are none left! Yet despite that Islamophobia, thousands of Muslims arrive in the West every month to find jobs, get married, have children, because they want to be RICHER and HAPPIER while HATING EVERYTHING ABOUT THE WEST. Just as they have Islamophobia and we have anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism.

"u didn't even respect the country u stayed in for 13 years , and once u left it u started insulting it,that u posted it twice!!!"
Did I choose to be born in Egypt? Did I choose to be Egyptian? Did I choose to waste 13 perfectly good years of my life here? NO. Should I respect a country that's given me so much misery? NO. There's nothing to respect about Egypt or Egyptians. And yes, I posted it twice. I SAID I WAS LOOKING FOR MORE ANSWERS.
"don't come to EGYPT again , ppl like u aren't welcomed."
If you clicked my profile you would see that I'M EGYPTIAN. And I've been wishing to leave this country since I was 15, 3 years ago. There's no money. There's no way to make money. If I COULD leave I WOULD leave. And it doesn't matter if I'm not welcomed now, is it? Because I CAN'T LEAVE.
Please use your head next time you insult me, MUSLIMROSE.

All I can say is, keep strong, keep going to school, so someday you can leave. Egypt is a great destination for tourists, though I used to live in a tourist town called stratford ontario, it was a miserable place and while I lived their I felt the same way and found people pretty much the same as you do (exept for women being hassled and raped on a daily basis, just weekly). Tourist towns suck. I think you just see the forest for the trees. Obviously their is not alot of good in egypt, however maybe you can do what you must to make it a better place. You can fight the power! Alot of people have a over romantisized view of egypt and only know what they see when they look at the travel brochure. If you see whats wrong with egypt and no one else you know does, help them see. You cannot change the past, but you can change the future.

unfortunately thats true. i live in the USA but came for a visit and yes the girls here were very tight clothes and watch the very bad movies. Although those wearing niqab dont those who wear hijab wear a tight short sleeved shirt and under it the dreaded body (which is extremely tight). im egyptian and i live in america and ive never wore pants outside only skirts and shirts that have to be approved by my father. there are different levels of bad here in egypt and some you can hardly differentiate between a muslim egyptian and some girl from a western country. there are times where i thank Allah that I'm living outside from what I see here and thank God i'm leaving soon. However I still like Egypt. Rabina yihdeehum

I have known really rich people and they still have their problems, and one in particular, he had millions upon millions, he enjoyed the luxuries that money could buy and at least he didn't have money worries, but he did have worries through his life, he argued like everyone else, had a failed marriage behind him, always had hangers on after his money, he had every day problems like everyone else, but what he did have was the security of being able to pay for the best health treatment and being able to not worry about paying bills.
He did get burgled a few times, and was robbed once, so he was a target for those that wanted some of what he had. People scratched his car because it was a fantastic car, all sorts of things happened to him.
His money was self made, so he knew both sides of having money and not having money and he seemed perfectly normal, just like the rest of us.
I don't think he thought for a minute that it is heaven on earth, he just thought that life is what you make it!

I feel for you. I have been to Egypt many times and can honestly say that I could not live there! Don't get me wrong I love the place and the people but its very different from a tourists point of view. The reason I love it and will keep coming back is that I'm an Egyptologist in the making, the history of ancient Egypt fascinates me. I think next time I'll spend more time in Luxor, I need more time at Karnak temple... its HUGE!

Egypt was the first place to know the civilization .... what u say is the bad side ... every country or city has the good side and bad side... for example , New york .... if you want me to show the bad side of this city , it will take me the whole page .... and so is many and many cities .... but we must look at both of the good and bad faces .. it's not bad or shame to know the wrong side , we must know it in order to fix it ...

Every place has its good points and bad points. There is no perfect country on this earth. Egypt is fascinating to me purely because of all the history that is there. Such a very old civilization is something foreign to me as a Canadian.
