Rx was used as an abbreviation for the Latin word recipe = "take"
So when a doctor writes an Rx, he/she is telling the patient to "take" what he/she has prescribed.
It is also used as an instruction to the pharmacist to take the items listed and to prepare the medicine for the patient.
