yes, canadas are now classed as vermin due to there numbers,
As for shooting them with an air rifle, they will jus laugh at you.
Hitting them with a shot gun sometimes takes some doing

It's not season right now, but there are cases where the DNR will give special permits to deal with nuisance animals. The main ones are relocation, nest destruction permits, and our DNR does often give out firecracker shotshells to deal with nuisance wildlife. Chances are if the geese are a problem there and your neighbors are reputable people I would guess that they called the DNR and got these firecracker shotshells to scare them away. Especially if you never see any geese dropping after a shot. If the geese are being killed then it's poaching unless they have some special permit that I haven't heard of, give an anonymous call to your local DNR office in this case.

canada geese are a pest species so they are legal. you will still need a license to shoot them and as for using an air rifle thats just being silly. go home little child for the countryside will be a far safer place without you.

"Problems associated with geese include droppings on lawns and beaches, which may contaminate drinking water sources, aggressive behaviour toward humans, and collisions with aircraft."
"There are 11 different races of Canada Geese ranging from the
Cackling Canada Goose, which can weigh as little as 1.1 kg, to the largest of all geese, the Giant Canada Goose, which can weigh up to 8 kg."
"Researchers have determined that Canada Geese have about 13 different calls ranging from loud greeting and alarm calls to the low clucks and murmurs of feeding geese."

The RSPB
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds:
The RSPB condones the killing of Canada and greylag geese on its land. Birds it considers "pest species", such as gulls, crows and magpies, are also killed regularly.
Trivia:
Migrating geese in Canada have been known to allow hitchhikers! Smaller birds have occasionally been found on their backs.
""Last year I helped bring up two injured Canada goslings. They grew so tame they would sit on my lap for a cuddle while I watched T.V. When fully-grown they had to go to an animal sanctuary. They were normally quiet geese, but one day they were heard honking loudly. A worker at the sanctuary investigated, and saw a wild Canada goose being pushed along by my tame couple. It had been badly injured by fishing-line. Not only did my two tame geese get help for their friend in need, but they then waited nearby until they saw him again: staying for two days outside the barn in which the injured goose was recovering."
Canada geese were first introduced to Britain in 1665 as an addition to the waterfowl collection of King Charles II at St. James’ Park.
Numbers remained low until the 1950s when they started to increase significantly. The 1991 census recorded 63,581 Canada geese in the U.K.
However, evidence now suggests that the population in urban areas is now levelling out due to competition for nesting sites.

Bill Lishman - "Father Goose"
Due to interference with their habitat, many birds are who are by nature migratory species no longer depart for southern climes at the onset of winter. Using a natural phenomenon called imprinting, in which birds of of some species follow anything they see within the first twenty four hours of life, the newly hatched birds would imprint on Lishman, his microlight aircraft and a tape recording of the insect like droning of the engine.
In October of 1993 Lishman took off from his Toronto farm in a microlight of his own design and construction. Eighteen birds followed 'Goose Leader' in a V-formation all the way south to Virginia. The following April the banded flock returned unaided to Lishman's farm to greet their surrogate father. Eventually the principles learned by working with common birds could be applied to endangered species such as whooping cranes and trumpeter swans. Father Goose is the heartwarming fascinating story of a modern day ecological hero."
