The references to Satan in the Old Testament are few and far between. He is mentioned several times in the Book of Job, but in this context he is working for God and serves God's will by testing the faith of Job. The majority of the references to Satan are in the Apocrytha and the New Testament.
If we take the accounts of the New Testament we find Satan to be exceedingly evil and also frequently appearing on Earth in person to test people or trick them.
The Apocrytha (the religious books that were decided to be omitted from the Bible in 325AD) paints a different picture. In the Book of Enoch there is the full story of the fallen angels. Basically some angels came to earth and taught man many things but as they spent too long amongst men and had revealed too many things God would not allow them back in heaven and as such they remained living amongst men for a time before going elsewhere. In this case Satan appears more as a Prometheus than a despoiler.
Anyway the morality of Satan (and even his name and role) vary a lot throughout the scriptures and as such I really can't say how good or bad Satan was.
"Flee the icy Lucifer.
Oh he's an awful fellow!
What a mistake!
I didn't take a feather from his pillow.
Here's the everlasting rub: neither am I good or bad.
I'd give up my halo for a horn and the horn for the hat
I once had." - Ian Anderson (from A Passion Play)

Satan wanted to be the boss. He wants to take as many souls with him as possible it's a battle he knows he won't win but he's gong to take as many with him as he can. You see evidence on people doing these things as well. What about the lady who decided since some man gave her AIDS she would sleep with a lot of men to get them sick too... She knew it wouldnt save her, but she did it out of anger, not truly thinking that those men would infect more women. So we see some of this same logic in our world. If I'm going down I'm gonna take the whole ship type attitude.
Some people are that bad the murders, child molesters, rapist etc. So why would you think if they can be that bad why wouldn't Satan??? He has a LOT more power as a fallen angel than they do.

No he has not gotten a raw deal. He thought he could do better and tell God what to do. NOT! Now he's gotta take whatever he has coming to him. And there are people just as bad. It's a shame.

"I have no special regard for Satan; but I can at least claim that I have no prejudice against him. It may even be that I lean a little his way, on account of his not having a fair show. All religions issue bibles against him, and say the most injurious things about him, but we never hear his side. We have none but evidence for the prosecution and yet we have rendered the verdict. To my mind, this is irregular." - Mark Twain

Far from it! He led a rebellion in Heaven and got shot down and separated from God's grace eternally because of it. No sin or potential for such could be allowed to exist in Heaven, so Satan's punishment had to be direct and eternal. he brought it upon himself. Granted, he has yet to taste the fullness of God's wrath yet, but when that day comes, it'll be a victory song for all Christians, praising Him forever for giving us that victory over sin, death, Hell and the grave.

Who knows? If you take the view that the god of the bible is actually the guy from downstairs, then the old testament atrocities suddenly make perfect sense!

Isaiah 14:12How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Revelation 12:7And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
