I'm thinking the first is correct, in that; if you truly "know yourself", you will know why you need to believe in God and can better serve those human needs in a more rational, "grown up" manner.

To my thinking we cannot know God until we know ourselves. So I agree with you. Jesus taught that his Father was Spirit, not a physical material being. That God should be worshipped in spirit and truth. Virtually all religion and philosophy teach that their Divine One is not of this material plane but above and beyond. When we speak of God with physical or materialistic qualities we are only placing our thoughts on Him. Hence the idea that man has created God in his own image.
I believe our true and real selves are not these physical bodies but our souls. Our souls are also not of the material plane. But where are most peoples' attention focused? With God in spirit or here in this world? We all know the answer to that. From this we can see that to know God then we must start to learn about our spiritual self, our soul. As we begin to know more and more then we will begin to trully know God.

1 John 2 KJV

3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his Laws(commandments).

4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his Laws (commandments), is a LIAR, and THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM.

5 But whoso keepeth his Law, in him verily is the love of Yahweh perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

Actually, it should be "To know God is to refuse to know thyself".
Jesus said in Luke 17:33 "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
"
Knowing and accepting God means we deny ourselves of everything in life Luke 9:23 "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me"

I disagree because our will so contrasts the will of God (the will of sin is contrast to the will of God)
