Adam's body was never recovered. John and Reve Walsh nearly went insane from grief. A ferocious serial killer named Ottis Toole became a suspect in 1983 and confessed to the killing on two separate occasions. He later recanted both confessions. Toole died in prison without ever being charged in the crime. "I believe he killed Adam," John Walsh told reporters at the time of his death.
No one has been proven to have committed the murder, although one man, Ottis Toole, repeatedly confessed and then retracted accounts of his involvement. Toole, allegedly a confederate of serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, was never charged in the Walsh case. In September 1996, he died in prison of cirrhosis of the liver while serving a life sentence for other crimes.

The chief suspect in the case, Ottis Toole, died without being prosecuted in the case.
John Walsh, Adam's father, maintained that Toole was the killer. Police in Florida lost the DNA evidence that would have been necessary to convict Toole - the technology to use DNA as evidence did not exist at the time of the murder.
There's a story that gives some insight into the evidence loss here: http://edition.cnn.com/US/9602/adam_walsh/

I don't think so. But did you know Mrs. Walsh would drop the kid off at a toy store in the mall for 8 hours while John was at work? She was having an affair. Just as sickning is how John made himself a millionaire using his sons murder.
John knew his wife was having an affair. This was comman knowledge where they lived. So John is not the saint they make him out to be.
