I'd love to know how he managed to build a boat big enough to fit 2 of every animal/bird/insect species in the world on it. There's at least 100 different species of spider for example!
The only explanation I've heard that makes even a shred of sense is that the great flood took place in a localised area, and apparently there is evidence of this flood in what we know as the Holy Land.
Obviously for this, and with any story in the Bible, one has to allow for artistic licensing and take it with a HUGE bucket of salt...

God sent the animals to Noah, in twos because it only takes 2 to reproduce(providing they are of the opposite sex), anymore than that and there wouldn't have been room in there (Don't laugh it's more plausible than you realize)....
The animals themselves would have travelled and colonized different areas. Most of the world was re-discovered 1000s of years later, remember the egyptians and the knowledge they had and most of it lost, we still don't know how they built the pyramids so modern man has no reason for arrogance...

Noah is a story; It is not a documented fact.
Yes there were boats in those days and yes there were floods in those days. The story of Noah is an exaggeration of basic human living to the extreme for story telling. There are people who claim to be finding "The ark" on the side of a mountain as using it as proof that Noah's ark was real. That is not proof of anything except for regular human conditions at that point. Yes people built boats in those days and yes there were floods in those days, but those two facts do not prove the story of Noah's Ark,
For example, today we have urban legends. These are stories that are patently "not true", but many people believe them. People believe them because many elements of the urban legends are true and a convincing story teller can effectively weave a tale around the parts are are "not true".
A classic example is the story of the "Bermuda Triangle". Almost all of the stories within the Bermuda Triangle have real world simple and verifiable-to-this-day explanations, but the books that accurately and painstaking debunk the Bermuda Triangle do not sell as well.
They are not exciting books to read.

the animals must have all been local at that time. Perhaps the habitat allowed animals to live there that don't live there any more. Variation might also explain some of it. Perhaps some su-species didn't exist back then, polar baers for instance. Forgive my exact use of language, but I hope it shows that there are at least possible answers.

Noah diud it because that's what the myth of Gilgamesh said , and the story of Noah was based on that .... something else Christians stole from earlier religions.

much of the Old Testament is symbolism and quite difficult to understand logically as it is written for a people whose limited understanding meant that they didn`t always put down in words what they couldn`t fully understand and so they put these in the form of stories to make it easy for the people and for the instruction of their children.
we know that the Bible contains the truth but it is not easy to see through the eyes of a people going back 3 or 4,000yrs.
the New Testament is a lot easier to understand though.

It never really happened. It's just a tale. A legend, or worse still a complete myth.
I'm glad to see the large number of rational responses to his question.
Secular Humanism is a good alternative to religious faith...
