Reo is right and I voted a positive vote for his answer. The thing is they really cannot be compared because they are two completely different artists. Munch depicted feelings and Escher 's work, though brilliant and intriguing, is void of feeling altogether. Escher was into tricks of the eye and in that sense all his work is the same. Munch tried with great success to paint all the human emotions. It is like trying to compare a Volvo to a monopoly game. Different things!

Your views on Escher and Munch are exactly the same as mine. I have an Escher print hung on my office wall right now. I once had the chance to buy an original Munch print of "The Scream" for £300, but in those days that was a lot of money, so I had to pass.

That's a tough one.
Munch's "The Scream" is arguably more famous than anything that Escher ever produced, but I don't think that any of the rest of his works really grab the imagination in the same way, although I do like some of his landscapes (see link 1) and the colour palette he uses is always interesting.
Escher's later works are certainly more interesting to me than any of Munch's works, purely for the fascination in the impossible images he conjures up (see link 2). His earlier work, however, I find to be quite tedious and uninteresting.
On balance I think it has to be Escher for his consistent genius in his later works.

Both paintings are wonderful. But I think they 'speak' to different parts of us. Escher, speaks to the mind, he shows us the familiar and then bends all the rules of reality.
Munch on the other hand, he speaks to the heart, perhaps this is why you find it hard to articulate why you like this painting. Munch's painting is about fear, something we all as humans recognize in ourselves and in others. We see this painting and we don't need explanations, we just know what is there.
I prefer Munch, simply because I think he has spoken to us more eloquently.

Escher was a fine draughtsman, while Munch challenged the viewer with expressionist visions. So different are the two, it makes a comparison impossible.

I like them both, and as they are very very different kinds of artists, I think I can like them both equally, just in different ways. It's like liking Dali and Hopper.
