I'm a Cockney. There are nicer accents in the world but I have to defend myself from the lunatic post above me. Cockney is an authentic London accent, originating from the market traders of East London and I for one, am very pleased it exists. It's a debasement of nothing and if we all went around homogenously speaking the 'Queen's English' which doesn't exist in modern Britain (except possibly in Buckingham Palace itself), this country would be a far duller place to live. Either you have never set foot in England or you are living in some kind of fantasy la-la land.

I find it horrid, especially as it makes speech nearly impossible to understand. How can the home of the BBC and a place so close to Kent and other places where they speak close to Queen's English have generated such a debasement of English?
