Good question. But even the scientists who proposed the theory of the Big Bang also don't know the answer.

Try asking Stephan Hawking. As far as I know, he can explain the process but he also do not know the "what".

Particle fluctuations.

I think that matter and/or energy has always existed because no theory can account for a state of nothingness and that things change over time because I see that happening all around.

I say that from a purely philosophical perspective as I have not studied the Big Bang very much..but I think the science backs up what I say.

God doesn't get you off the hook for any problem of infinite regression...If something can't come from nothing(which is logical) then where did god come from and who made the god that made god..ad infintum...

My understanding is that it occurred when a very small particle exploded. My question is, if there was such a particle, where did it come from and who put it there?

no idea . i would say that it didnt happen and that God created the planets as they are, but then again, i have no evidence to back up what i think is true so yeaa...
