I'd get a bank account in Australia. It is far more convenient should you need to discuss something with your bank, less prone to the bank saying no to withdrawals, and better control on exchange rate (as you are only transferring money from the UK to Australia once in a blue moon). More importantly, if you are working in Oz, you will need a local bank account for your pay to go into.

After just finishing 2yrs in the far east, I can tell you that it is so worth getting an account there.

It does not seem we get very good rates taking our money out of the atm.

But if you transfer in large sums to your new account, you stand to get a much better rate, when you withdraw with you 'local' atm card.

Check the transfer rate though. My bank charges 50 pounds, whilst my girlfriends is less then 10.

You know what, Nationwide says you can make free withdrawals anywhere in the world, maximum daily limit being £300.00 which I figure is more than enough if you will be in Auz. That really is true and my friends and I have their accounts as it saves us a whole lot from bank service fees and transfer commissions...

Enjoy Auz
