Harycool has nicely put certain points which do contribute in making the life of Indians (not Red Indians of the USA) happy. But the central point of all secrets is their tremendous faith in God and the Nature since time immemorial. The Hindu social values to look the whole mankind as one family and inter-dependence among family members according to the age factor still binds them together with love, mutual respect and obligation, so as to benefit each other.
Poverty and lack of education are relative terms. They value happiness more than pleasure, they cherish bliss more than comfort living. They rejoice by sacrifice. Happiness is a totality of living experience for Indians.

the society in india till date has not been affected by materalstic comforts. though in the cities it has started becming so. however the main reason for people in india being happy by and large are as follows
1 large number of festivals round the year as compared to the west which makes people participation possible and includes community activity. scintifically proved that commuity and group activities reduces stress
2 the life style is still resembling the natural way of living. that is getting up early, sleeping early and eating healthy food.\
3 the indians have a tradition of patriarchal family. they respect the elders a lot and rarely disobey. in india you will rarely find legal actions taken by a son against his father for scolding or beating.
4 the joint family system helps in solving problems in the household without consulting the lawyer. in the west for evry ridiculous thing the lawyer is consulted
5 the need for interdependence and dependence. as there is only one or two members frm the family who is earinng the bread and which leaves the other dependets. and consequently the dependents obey all that the key person says. in the west everyone is independent and for the same reason does not accomodate even the smallest of compromise. because he or she can survive alone
but the best thing is that the culture of india an the value are also deeply rooted. the hindu religion preaches to live and let live. and the majority of people in the country are the hindus.
that s it

sometimes I think having more makes it less likely that one would be happy. When I was drafted in 1969 the pay was only $137 a month and the conditions where I was stationed were not good, yet for that year or so my wife and I were the happiest of our 14 year marriage. For one thing nobody can steal what you do not have.
could have been the alcohal and drugs I spose

If they are happier, then it is becasue they are not tainted by our modern society's temptations and find happiness without all our gadgets, or it could be the alcohol.

Happier? Why do you think that? I've heard of depression, alcholism, suicide, etc...I'm ashamed I've never really thought about how they need our prayers until now.
