I have Windows XP SP2 installed.

I have a problem that whenever the system is left untouched for some interval of time, the system automatically shuts down.
There are no viruses or problem with power settings.
What could be the reason then ?

Its due to the Power Saver option being active. You can change the settings from Start>Control Panel>Power Options.

Check to see whether you have enabled the settings for automatic shutdown. You can check this by the follwing

Right Click on the Desktop - Properties
Click on Screen Saver - Power
Check to see whehter Turn Off Hard Disk or Hibernate is set to on. If they are on, disable them and check to see if the problem solves.

Some software, automatically shutdown themselves when they receive an update from the Internet. So, if you are conected to the Internet, when you are not using the PC, remove the Network Cable.

It may also be the cause of a script. Run a software such as Registry Defragmenter from http://www.download.com and clean the Registry for the scripts.

Hi, there are a number of possibilities. Windows XP has a feature called 'Automatic Updates' and this will install updates automatically, and restart your machine without asking. Another possibilty is that your PC is over heating.

Ok simple answer:

You need to goto the:

1) Control Panel
2) Power management settings

And then disable the setting there. Change it to something like "Always On" This will stop the timer from turning your computer off.

Hope this works...

if your system is prompting msg of shuting down then system must be giving you 60 seconds.
