It's a mini amplifier. I went deaf earlier this year and they have really helped me. They are not perfect but at least I can still get to hear things.

Basically, it contains a microphone, an amplifier, and a speaker. The sound picked up by the microphone is played louder into the wearer's ear to compensate for their hearing loss.
Many (but not all) hearing aids are tailored to amplify some sounds more than others: for example, many people suffer a higher degree of hearing loss at high frequency, so the hearing aid would amplify high frequency sounds more than low frequency sounds.
A growing area is customised hearing aids, where the amplification characteristics of the hearing aid are programmed to suit the specific individual: a bit like a "graphic equaliser" in a stereo system. This is usually done once, at the time of fitting, using special equipment.

That should help you. I wear hearing aids because I have a moderate hearing loss which means that at times without my hearing aids I have to ask people to repeat what they say or lip read them. They have made a big to my life in communicating with others.

the technical side is a little complicated but the use of a hearing aid to someone completely deaf as i myself am gives you a new lease of life otherwise its a very silent world
