I have a question.

Since I was young, I have always heared the saying ' he wants to have his cake and eat it'. What in the hell does this mean. Why wouldn't someone want to eat their cake?

In my opinion, that saying is dumb. What else can you do with your cake but eat it. Of course I want to have my cake and eat it.
I dont want to just stare at my cake.
Its like saying 'He wants to have his car, and drive it aswell, how arrogant'.

Could someone please elaborate on this phrase?

The very fact that you have poor english and are asking ignorant questions, tells me you aren't from here.

It's a figure of speech. For example... He has a wife, but sees another woman on the side. He wants to have both.

i remember seeing something about this in a history docu.young princes i think it was were to be introduced to the world and win over the people by handing out cake at the palace to the poor.so it was a good thing for the princes future but some didnt want to give theirs away hence you cant have your cake for popularity reasons and then eat it yourself (stubbon and obnoxcious)

Its another way of saying you're greedy and you want it all without sharing with anyone else . The cake they talk about is like a birthday cake - a big cake that you have but then cut it and share it usually. In having your cake and eating it your being selfish and greedy and keeping it all yourself xxx

it means someone who want two things at one that are mutually exclusive, you cant still have you cake if you have eaten it, but like you say whats the point in having it if you cant eat it, you want the best of both worlds so to speak

I've used that saying many times.
One of my friends had a boyfriend that wanted to be with her, yet wanted to go out and enjoy life and not be committed to anyone. this is him wanting his cake and eating it. He wants it all basically.

I totally agree with you! It is a stupid saying. Basically it's a way of saying you can't have everything.
