The Vicks advert, the one with the screaming kid. Why the hell does his 'mother' not make him pick up the things he has just thrown on the floor when he has his tantrum?
I know it's only an advert, but to me it is a reflection of what is wrong with some parents today and the way they discpline their children.

queenmaeve172000, I know what you are saying, but the parent and child toddle off and leave the groceries where he threw them. I'm not saying the mother should give him a good hidding, just make him put them back.

lamyarhull, yes I have experienced one of my four children having a tantrum both in the town centre and at the supermarket, I probably dealt with it in the same way that you did, what I am trying to address is the way the child is allowed to get away with throwing another persons property on to the floor and has not been made to pick it up, I know that if it was one of my children they would be made to put the items back.

If you're talking about a quick slap around the leg to shock the little fecker into obedience then work away if it works for you and yours. I wont judge you. Some kids are beyond talking sometimes. Like most animals the young are physically put in their place by the parents to establish the packs pecking order. I guess it's kind of a natural rhythm to life.
Saying that I've been lucky in that my lad has rarely given me cause to go beyond talking to him. Usually a look will stop him misbehaving. Failing that I count to 5 so he can hear. He has no idea what would happen if I ever got to 5, but he always makes it by 4

The very fact that the kid is SO out of control is what makes the ad funny. This kind of humor is called "shock" humor. Ever notice that things that shock people make them laugh? Like swear words. That's why some comedians use so many of them, Like George Carlin. The shock in this commercial means the ad folks think MOST people actually would find this bahavior shocking.

I think boycotting is the only really effective way to stop bad commercials from setting bad examples. Try to get a group together to boycot it if you think it's that bad.

I think the same thing every time I see this advert.

Perhaps it's because SOME people with children seem to think the world should revolve around them.

Because the kid is out of control. You don't help situations when you are out of control too. The kid should pick up his toys but only when the screaming stops.Something is bothering the kid. There are many ways to discipline a child without physically getting into a fighting match.

Good for you .I hate it .All the wrong messages.People are so rude and badly behaved on T.v.No wonder there is so much bullying and arrogance when crass behaviour is shown to be the norm.

I suggest you write to the Vicks company. It's not until we do something about these types of advertisements that there will be a change. There are way too many advertisements today that are problematic!
