I tried re-installing a higher version of MS Office but it makes use of the same configuration as the previous version so it made no difference. Every time its supposed to go to the next line, it jumps many more. But this problem isn't there when I continue an existing word document.

I assume that this happens when you hit enter also?

If that is the case, I think you have double, or more line spacing option enabled.

To disable this:

Right Click > Paragraph > Indents & Spacing Tab > Line Spacing > Single.

This should resolve the problem.

P.S Reffering to this only happening on your own documents and not anyone else's I believe the document remembers the original authors settings and thus will retain them when passed on.

Hey mate, i think u've probably got Word 2007, yeah? Well the spacing is different as Microsoft have switched it. To do normal lines, press shift+enter every time you want to go to the next line. Annoying i know. Hope this helps.

One best way to get rid of it is to reset customised settings!
Follow these steps.
Open MS Word
Go to Help -> Detect & Repair
Select "Discard my customised settings & restore default setting"
Click Start button
If asked give Office installation CD

That's it.

Set the line spacing to 1.0. It is probably presently set to more than 1.0.
