Maybe this story will help...A mom & dad took their 7 year old son and his dog to the vet., because the dog had not been feeling well. After the vet. finished examining the dog he took the parents into the other room to let them know their pet was very ill and would have to be put down. He advised them to take the little boy home and try to explain the situation before putting the dog down. So, the parents took the little boy home and did the best they could trying to explain the situation.
The next day, the family returned to the vet. to say their goodbyes and when the vet walked into the room, the little boy looked up at the vet and proceeded to tell the him, he didn't need his parents to tell him why pets didn't live as long as humans. The vet looked surprised, and ask the little boy to explain...And here is what he had to say....You know, pets come in this world loving unconditionally and it takes humans a life time to learn how to love like this...So you see, pets don't need as long here on earth to make an impact on someones life....and I bet if humans loved like this, they wouldn't need as much time on earth either..

I really wish I could give you a word or phrase that would make the pain go away, but there isn't an easy fix for this. In time, the pain that you're feeling will lessen, but you will never stop missing your dog. Just remember that even though a pet has crossed that rainbow bridge, doesn't mean that they're not still with you. You will carry your dog's love around in your heart every day.

The pound is the best idea I can think of. I lost my first dog very suddenly after just 4 weeks of having her, due to a road accident. The pound where she had come from called me 3 days later to say they had her, she had been running loose. I told them they didn't, but they insisted I came in with proof. They had a dog just like her, which I planned on adopting, but unfortunately she also died in the pound. They had another dog though that the control officer had just brought in and thought I would like, and when I met her I just had to have her. She made me feel so much better. She had come from a puppy mill where she had got too old to breed, and needed someone to bathe her, feed her properly, and show her love.
I was lost without my first dog. I didn't want to go to bed because she used to sleep on my bed, and it smelled like her. The sight of her bowls and toys lying around was too much to bear. But Ladybird, the dog I adopted, made all that go away. To begin with she would barely walk because of her aches and pains, and depression. Now she runs and plays, and I can't think of any better memorial to my first dog.
If you don't feel ready for another dog, maybe go to the petstore and buy some treats or chews, and take them to the dogs at your local pound or shelter. It will make their day, and will most likely brighten yours too.

My first dog that was truly mine died November 13 at the vet's during a dental surgery. I couldn't believe it. I just kept remembering the little things he did. He would wait in my bedroom until I called him up into the kitchen with me. He was always wanting to climb above my other dogs. He would grab a bear and shake it for dear life. But, we immediately got a new foster dog. She is a puppy and because she has so much energy, she just brought new life into the house. I miss Hansolo, and I always picture him in heaven waiting for me, but having new life helps me refocus.

Go to a dog pound and walk through, you will not be able to leave the place without taking one of those animals with you, plus you will be saving a life. I'm not suggesting that this will replace the best friend you have lost but it will help you get through the pain. Good luck.

This might not answer your question , but i want to share an experience which happened many years back when my dog died , this incident still gives me the goosebumps . My dog of 9yrs DENNIS had died of snake bite and we had just buried him in my backyard , he was the love of my life , and I was totally heart broken and besides myself with grief. The burial happened around 5 pm and my family went inside the house..... all very silently ......some crying and others totally lost in their own thoughts. There was a rain storm that night and just before supper there were huge thunderclaps and lots of lightning. Then the strangest thing happened which I cant explain till date .............we heard scratching sounds on the kitchen door which leads to the backyard . At first we ignored them but they just got louder and louder.
Finally fed up with the sounds I opened the kitchen door and had to immediately step aside as close to 9 dogs entered my house all of them waging their tails and trying to lick my hands , I had never seen those dogs (they were wolf like) in all the years we have stayed there and have never seen those dogs again since that day. My sister came into the kitchen to see what i was shouting about and for the longest time we just looked into each others eyes . She took my dogs (DENNIS'S )bowl filled it with milk and opened two packets of biscuits and all of them had some and left just as they had come. Till date both of us speak about this incident and have very fond memories of DENNIS
Your dog has only passed on to the other side , and even if he cant reach you by himself you will still see how he tries to comfort you through his friends
and through mysterious ways you cannot even begin to imagine.

I lost my 15 year old dog this May. It was hard, we had to put him to sleep. What helped me was believing that he went to a better place. I also believe that a part of him is still with me......watching me when I need him. I joined Dogster!! It hellped a lot. I made a webpage for him, in his memory. there is a big community of dog lovers on Dogster, it's great!
