The two things that primarily make a car safe are ABS and air-bags. In India only the top end variants of luxury cars come with air-bags, and top-end versions of still more cars come with ABS. Do note that apart from the Maruti Suzuki Swift ZXi, and the top-end fiesta which comes with ABS all the other top end variants are only assembled in India as completely knocked down kits, which means that their spares are likely to be expensive.
Cars known to be safe in India are
1. The highest end SUVs - Nissan/Renault X-Trail (Airbags + ABS), Mitsubishi Pajero and Montero, Toyota Landcruiser, etc
2. Soft-roaders such as GM Forrester and Honda CR-V (ABS + Airbags)
3. All versions of BMW, Merc, Audi come with Airbags and all safety equipment standard
4. Skoda Superb (and the soon to be available VW Passat which is on the same platform), Skoda Laura(Abs only), Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Embera, all come with ABS and Airbags, apart from other sophisticated warning systems.
Vehicles which are perceived to be safe, though they come with neither ABS nor Airbags are
1. Ford Fusion (ABS no longer available)
2. Mahindra scorpio (because of size) though handling is suspect at higher speeds.
Amongst the small cars, these cars have been designed to be 'safer' by crumple zone design as well as robustness of passenger cab, in this order -
1. Fiat Palio
2. maruti Swift
3. Tata Indica
Also safe because of robustness are the Indigo and Indigo Marina variants.
