Hey why doesn't you opt for Maruti Wagon R? New model is pretty handsome with rear looking the best in class. The engine - no complaints at all !!! Its efficient, smooth and responsive. For city manoeuvrability of Wagon R is best. Mileage - no concerns at all. Interiors are well appointed and have more storage places than Santro. Finishing of Wagon R is Far superior than Santro. Also Santro is a bit bumpy for rear passengers while Wagon R gives comparatively smooth drive. I own both the cars and i am real love for Wagon R (new model). Resale value of Maruti brand is not at all surpass able by Hyundai. Maruti Network and service speaks for itself. Parts of Wagon R are easily and cheaply available in open market while for santro u have to work hard in open market. So the ultimate choice by me is Wagon R and rest is your decision !!!!

Tough question. Personally I do not like the way both cars look. With the new ERLX engine Santro has inched a little forward in terms of drivability. But the engine managment system of WagonR is much better with a 32-bit micro processor than the 8-bit MP of Santro. Japanese engines are much more reliable than a Koreans' and I will any day bet my money on it. The gear changing experience is also better in Santro. The WagonR gear change lacks finesse. On the suspension front I think the WagonR chasis is much rigid than Santro's. The suspension too is better on WagonR and rear seat comfort is much better as well. Rear leg space too is better on WagonR. Fit and finish is equally bad on both cars. The seats on WagonR are better and offer better support. The new steering wheel on WR looks and feels better. On the exterior Santro uses curves whereas the WR uses straight lines. The clever use of the straight line though renders a boxy look, immensly increases luggage carrying capacity of the WR. You can shift houses using a WR. That is the amount of luggage space it has. The recent facelift makes the WR look marginally better. The electrically adjusted mirrors on the WR VXI are a thoughtful addition. On the financial part of the equation, WR will cost much less (about Rs.20k-Rs.30k) than a similar Santro as Maruti is offering pretty decent discounts on the new WR as well to woo customer in the Diwali season.
It must be pretty clear by now that my choice is a WR in terms on value for money. Another option for you might me the new Zen maruti plans to launch in Nov06. It will be priced in the same bracket as WR, but looks much better and has fresher interiors. If you can wait it might be a very good alternative.

Donot think much go for a santro.
i donno if suzuki makes a good resale value in india but in us it just sucks the depreciation is terrible.
they are too small cars for you to bother about handling etc.
in india the max you would drive is 100kmph, and mostly the traffic is heavy, so look for a car with good build quality , less troubles (not cause it has more service centers but cause it gives less troubles in future)
and the last but main thing is resale value.
in future anybody would upgrade to a new car.
then imagine getting a better resale value feels like well invested :)
i used to drive a santro before and its a great car.
