the breed of dog that would suit me?

- No long haired breeds
- Protective of owner/s and house
- Small to small medium size
- Friendly to our friends
- Will like being indoors a great deal
- Will like being outdoors at times
- Can't be a yappy (barking) breed
- Can't be taught easy/fairly easily
- NO poodles (or curly haired equivalents)
- Sturdy breed
- Well priced
- We live in Brisbane, Australia

We were looking at Whippets, but they seem to be expensive.
WE were maybe thinking something along the lines of a Jack Russell or Chihuiahua x Fox Terrier.

What do you think?

kathyk214: We are looking at shelters first, them breeders. We would prefer to save the life of a shelter dog (mixed breed) than have a pure bred. TY

Your best bet is go to a shelter and look at what they have there. Chances are you will find the perfect companion without spending too much money and saving a life at the same time.
If you want a pure breed they have them as well. Or go to petfinder.com they have a huge selection.
Shelter pets need a home more than pet stores and breeders need your money. Please adopt and save a life.

evelyn is right: beagle is good. all pups will be yappy, any dog will be protective and friendly with the right training. I own a German Rottweiler. He's the friendliest teddy bear of a dog in my small Kansas town but at the same time he is the most feared guard dog in the town. Only one of my good friends doesn't call before he comes over because the dog is completely at ease with him. He's very defensive around my wife's mother, but that probably has something to do with animals being able to sense pure evil. lol!

Jack Russels I can tell you from experience are very high strung high maintenance dogs. They are also possesive and not very good with kids. If you want something medium sized that is well mannered and good indoors or out try a golden retriever or a collie of some sort they seem to be the best. Good luck with your search I hope you find the right dog for you.

Sounds like a terrier might suit you.
Scotties are nice, Sealyhams are even nicer but are hard to find here in the states.
Some of the toy breeds may be good for you as well. Chinese Cresteds are really great. (I have several). Love them like crazy.

Chihuahuas are yappy.

If you can find a smallish pittie (one of mine is smallish) they might fit the bill. All my friends get lick attacked the moment they walk in, (mine) don't bark a lot, very sturdy, good with kids, the only downer is that they are *stubborn*... I haven't managed to train mine yet :(... price should be good though due to the bad stigma attached to the animals... many will just give them away!

Beagles are very loud, and scotties and toys wouldn't be very much for guarding the house.

Your 'ideal dog' sounds like my dog, he is a broder terrier and is GEORGOUS. However, as with any dog should be ouside alot, not stuck indoors.

If you are looking for an inside animal then how about a cat? they dont need walking as dogs do and are just as loving and affectionate!

Happy hunting! x

Beagle is a good option.

Also a "similar" good option (in my opinion) is the dashund. http://loveyourdog.com/dachshunds.html

IF you get a daschund, get a smooth one, cause Longhaired and Wirehaired daschunds have LOTS of hair.
