"Christian" literally meant "christ-like." It was used by the non-christian community to INSULT the followers of Jesus. "Those nuts are just like Jesus. They are absolutely christ-like!" The Christians quickly considered it to be the best complement they could get & started refering to eachother as Christian.

IN English. "Christian" means Christ Follower as does the name Christopher.
If you follow His Son, Jesus, you are a Christian.

Its all in the linguistics and not religion, per se.
