Compared to NT,2000,XP (mainly XP pro)
Disadvantages are:
-poor group policy - domain policy settings support
-not meant to be multi-user, therefore lacking folder permissions and a multi-user security model, meaning in 98 anyone can get to anyone's files, and anyone can install anything, there is no concept of user privileges, such as admin and limited accounts
-poor implementation of TCP/IP, you cannot change anything in the network stack without rebooting, such as a static IP addresses
Advantages:
-will run on hardware that 2000 and XP may be sluggish on
To sum it up, 98 is meant to be a single user independent PC, while the NT line is meant to be (or at lease better suited to be) part of a network environment

Lots of disadvantages, networking, security (nonexistant), and most new apps wont run on 98. Windows 98 is ancient compared to a modern operating system. The only advantage of it would be it's size. Its only a few hundred MB if I remember right. If you want my netrual opinion, you might think about giving Linux a shot, since I am assuming this is old hardware anyway. There is LOTs of online help/forums etc, with Linux also.
Good Luck, Zach
