Yes, I found it very very much so. My husband attends school and had two girls for lab-partners in his advanced anatomy class. I had no problem with either of them calling him for homework help, questions about notes or anything like that. Until one of the girls decided to call him and talk to him about more then just class. She would ask her question (usually something stupid that sounded more like a bullshit excuse to call him) and then start chatting with him. It didn't help that she would call first thing in the morning while we were having coffee before we split off to our respective jobs/classes, but afterwards around dinner time and later.
It makes for a very uncomfortable and stressful situation. I would avoid it unless you know him too. Then you can talk to both of them without him having fear of his wife giving her attention to another man.

As long as their spouse and yours is OK with the situation, then why not! It is only not OK when it can cause drama with the spouse of one of the "friends". One can never have enough friends. I am in a serious relationship, but still have friends of the opposite sex who I contact on a daily basis. My partner accepts this, and in fact has his own female friends who he talks to, so it does not cause any problems. It also makes me feel that I am not hiding anything from him, and we therefore have a very trusting and open relationship. Problems arise when one partner is unaware of the friendship, finds out, and gets jealous over it.

Totally appropriate to have an opposite sex married friend, why not ? So long as, both of them knew their limitation, behaviour , respect ;etc. You cannot be so sensitive in choosing your friends, main factor both of you are happy with the companionship and shared a similar objective. Should be OK !

I don't think this is inappropriate but we are living in Asia country so you definitely face gossip on this sort of things. Utlimately, it is how you see the whole thing and as long as you know what is the right and wrong I believe that there should be no problem on this issue.

Get to know the spouse too so the one you're calling doesn't get the wrong idea of your motives and the spouse doesn't feel threatened. They may feel threatened anyway. If that's the case, best to back off.
