1. It's absolute crudity. Plain vulgar.
2. In the USA, there are still old laws pertaining to spitting, that just aren't enforced today. Not only is it vulgar, but incredibly unsanitary.
3. At least you recognize, as do others, that these are people whom you do not want to associate with.

Because it has become acceptable and it might also be the macho thing.
Footballers here in the UK are seen doing it all the time so that sets a prescient if they do then why can not I!
It seems as if this is considered the same as swearing and all the other anti social habits if people are not given guide lines shown the basics of behaviour which is not acceptable they will turn into nasties with nothing to show except spitting and bad language.
This of course does not apply to every one only there is good and ghastly.

These people are filthy scum that are best dealt with by the cane or lash. Sadly, not only are these options no longer available but in metropolitan areas, the police have been directed to ignore such behaviour as these would mean arresting both Muslims who spit at Ramadan and other adult ethnics who routinely foul the footpath (and peoples' gardens).

They do this because they think it makes them look hard! When really to everyone else they look like dirty little pricks! It seems to be the chav culture that do the most spitting! They think they are great and really believe that the average person wants to be like them! The reality is they are the lowest of the low with very little respect for anyone!

Ugh I hate this. That's when as a woman you tell your friend very loudly "EWWWWW I hate when guys do that! He was cute until he spat out his lung on the sidewalk! GROSS!" That may do it.
I'd love to see that show "Girls Behaving Badly" do a segment on this. Or Jackass. They sit on the side of the street waiting for people to spit, then they pick it up and rub it in their hair. That'll teach them. (sorry, meanness coming out.)

it IS gross! I was at a party a while back and I had my eye on one prime example of the male of the human species. Untill he spit right on the floor that was, where everyone could see it. That was the end of my interest in him.

You will find that this disgusting habit--for that is what it is,a habit--is also a past time for GIRL'S too,usually of school age.I think they do it to impress their peer's,it's the "in" thing to do. They are ALL too young to realise that it can cause airborn infections,much the same way as sneezing can do,but whereas sneezing is a natural bodily function,spitting is not.

Ewww I hate that! I think they do it out of embarrassment. Like they feel that people are staring at them and they must spit to get the attention off them...EWWWWWWWWWWW
But it actually makes them look disgusting instead of cool.

there must be a law that prohibits spitting in public.WHAT A GRRRROOOOOSSSSSS HABIT.It (spitting )not only spread germs but what about the flies that swarm on the sputum.Why don't they spit in the lavatory instead?

Spitting is a disgusting habit. It spreads germs and diseases, like tuberculosis and influenza. My husband is a spitter and everytime he does it around me, I make a big stink about it. It is the one thing that I don't like about him at all.
