In as few words as possible, 'not_fair' nailed the answer.

Your question is impossible to answer. We're complex creatures; a mixture of good & bad, soft & hard, gentle & aggressive, loving & hateful. All is dependent on any given situation & the perspective of others.

Superficially, my true self is ...

... fiercely independent when I have to fend for myself
... ferociously protective of my loved ones
... stoic, loving, careful 'nurse' of family members with terminal illnesses
... the saddest person at a funeral
... intrepidly protective of strangers (been known to step into the middle of a man-fight, or thoughtlessly leap out of moving vehicles in order to rescue someone being beaten up)
... very accepting of others, as long as they're not total idiots
... adventurous (spent 2005 in Siberia, 2006 in Mexico; doing it on my own)
... a total cry-baby when I see sad things (can't handle watching people farewell or greet friends & family at the airport)
... a soft-touch when it comes to animals & kiddies (currently, the neighbourhood stray dog is eating as well as, if not better than me)
... accepting of & friendly to foreigners & strangers (made some awesome foreign friends back home)
... humble & appreciative as a foreigner (I've had a wonderful couple of years being taken & welcomed into homes; I've made some awesome friends!)
... long-fused (it takes a lot of pushing to make me lose my temper, but once I do you'd better run for cover!)
... I'll smother you with kindness & love if you attract my attention.

I don't think I'm very different from the average person, do you?

Tough question.... It really left me thinking who am I... Can we actually name that true self? I think, I am a creation of God who was sent here to explore the secrets of world (Earth and beyond) and try to make lives of people around me better...

I know, the answer is incomplete...

I think that if most of us were confronted with our true selves, we'd be horrified beyond words. We do almost everything we can do to avoid just that, don't we?

I'd like to think I'm different because I think I'm a good person, for the most part, but - I'm the same. I'd be afraid to see who I am when all of my favorite self-delusions are stripped away.

I think I am, probably, a very frightened, selfish, angry child underneath it all...

A 5 year old who loves Christmas, teddy bears, Harry Potter, flying kites and macaroni and cheese. A beautiful Child of God who is by His grace, hopefully, growing more and more into the image of His son.
