UNfortunately, if it is jst colloquial German, the free translator sites will not translate everything properly. In english, most people consider themselves fluent, but that fluency isn't in grammatically perfect english. The same goes in german. YOu will have a lot of trouble understanding you friend's translated messages, it would almost be better to just not read it, because the result would just be so mangled.
Ask around where you live, chances are that someone you know probably speaks at least some German. They would be your best hope.

you can go to this free sight that will translate german to english for free. all you have to do, is cut and paste the messages!
