I am curious to get people's input. At a retail store, I was using the men's room. I noticed a lady opening the door and looking in. There were other men in the restroom as well. As I left, she entered the men's room with no warning. She must've had a child in there, but I was wondering what other people think of her just walking in.

I would feel odd if the shoe were on the other foot. Most parents will take their children into the restroom of the gender of the parent- few people are bothered by the presence of an opposite gendered child using the restroom. I think if it were the case that she had a son in there, she'd have done better to take him to the women's room.

Believe me she must've had a child in there, no woman in her right mind would want to enter the mens room with that smell in there : )
I also do this when my son goes to the restroom but only if he is taking too long. I never barge in though I always knock and call for him in the restroom. And if no one is in there then I go in. I never questioned if anyone was offended by it but I will be more careful in the future. As a mother though I feel that there are so many perverts in the world that you have to be careful when your children are anywhere in public. There have been children raped and molested in public restrooms and my son is too old to go into the ladies room. So until I feel that he is old enough to handle himself I will be peeking in the men's room.

Its just as rong as a male walking into the females rest room. He would be scorned no doubt. It doesnt matter if she has a child in there or not. IF the child is old enough to go pee on his own then she has no business being there. Many parents bring their young kids of either sex into the ladies rest room and thats ok, but going into a different sex washroom to find your son and your a lady is not alright.

Just wanted to say nice comment carolina, you have a good point, he could have been in there for a while and she was worried, but she should have called out first.

She probably was trying to wait and see if the coast was clear. Also, was there a line out the door to the women's restroom? Then and only then will I consider using the men's room, and I'll ask a guy to go in there and check if the coast is clear.

Oh, and for those out there, please keep an eye on your kids when you're in the bathroom. I was in the ladies room once, and I had a kid look under the door at me to see what I was doing while in a public bathroom. The mom apologized, but hardly chastized her child. I was like, wtf!?! Now every time I'm in a public bathroom and I hear kids come in I get nervous. Wouldn't you??

I thought the accepted procedure when the parent and child were different sexes was to use the parent's restroom. The child is probably too young either to be embarrassed at being exposed or to embarrass others by seeing them, while the parent is not.

Either that or just always use the Women's, since we have sense enough not to pee in public.

She probably should have taken her child into a stall in the ladies room if he is not old enough to go to the restroom without her checking on him. most women understand when moms have to do that.

i'd probably give her the benefit of the doubt though, maybe she was worried he'd been in there for a while.

for the woman to go in and look for the child suggests that the child was quite young. I wouldn't feel happy about that either.
She should have taken him to the ladies loos if he couldn't cope.

Amazing considering all the hysteria about strange men in lavs - you would have thought that that would be the last place a mother would leave her child alone. You're right to find that odd.

She was also rude and inconsiderate not to announce to the the men that she was entering the loos.

some people...!

obviously rude and inappropriate.....
if the child is too young to go into the restroom unattended, then he should have gone into the women's restroom with his mother monitoring him.....i think most women would be more tolerant of a young male child in their restroom than grown men would be of a grown woman in theirs......what are people thinking when they do stuff like that???

If I were a guy, I would definitely feel odd about her reaction and maybe offended too. She could've warned the other guys inside before just walking in. I'd definitely be offended if a guy walked right into the ladies without any warning.
