In most cases they try to preserve as much tissue as possible. A hysterectomy technically is only removal of the uterus, leaving the cervix intact, as well as the ovaries in most cases. The only choice in your case would be to remove the cervix and uterus entirely, leaving you a blind vaginal canal. That would make intercourse potentially painful and difficult, if not nearly impossible due to the pain. You would still need a pap smear, but it would be harder to detect changes, as the scraping is done usually in a small area, and would be easier to miss in the vaginal walls left behind. Most women also prefer to avoid hysterectomy if possible, because of emotional objections, so doctors tend to avoid the suggestion if there are other alternatives. If you did not have this discussion with your GYN, perhaps you should do so now. Although they don't like to do it, they will do one if you feel strongly about it. He/She should also be willing to explain why one procedure was favored over another.

I had cervical cancer found thru a pap smear, They first did a cone biopsy, (took part of the cervix) that didnt get it all, so I had a total hysterectomy.(That means removal of the womb and both ovaries.} I had no complications, I have regular 2 yr pap smears (obviously on what is left of the cervix)and I am fit and well, and let me tell you, there is NO pain during intercourse. They treated the cervix NOT the vagina. ! Ask your Doctor why you didnt get a hysterectomy. , and dont take any notice of those who say sex is painful afterwards. Rubbish.! Best of luck to you.
