Henk you have obviously not worked in a restraunt as a server getting $2.13 an hour. If you have someone give you personal service of some sort, and they do a great job, tip them. Some places won't let employees take tips (I used to work at Hallmark, we weren't allowed to), but restraunts, hairdressers, nail salon, valet parking, concierge (the guy that helps bring your luggage to the room at a hotel), etc. I agree with all of these except the concierge. I was in Jerusalem and we were taken to our room by a concierge, who showed us the room, etc. He didn't carry in our luggage. I'm not going to pay someone to show me a room that I could have figured out myself. For the guy that toted my heavy luggage to my room, you bet. But lucky for me, the tips were included on my trip to Israel. Wherever you feel someone went above and beyond the call of duty deserves a good tip.

You should not have to give tips at all. It used to be fashionable because people were paid so little that tips made their wage. This is unacceptable. If a person does an honest job he should be paid a decent wage and not have to rely on the mood of someone else for a living. Maybe a tip would be in order if a person does more, on a personal level, than his job requires. But the job of a waiter is to serve me meals etc and he should not be tipped for that. His boss should pay him a wage sufficient to live on.

Hairsdresser if you really liked the do. Yes you can if you feel that nails was done really nicely. Valet parkers. Housekeepers at motels, hotels. Door men. Anyone that provides a service to you and you feel especially generous or can afford to do so.

Giving tips is not mandatory. You give tips to those people whom you think did their job wee. If yout think a pizza guy delivered your food in time and you were satisfied... give him a tip.
If you're in a hotel and they gave you an excellent service...give them a tip. Giving tips is actually an act of showing your appreciation. It doesn't matter where you are.
