I'm planning to move my family across Canada this winter, can't make up my mind whether to rent a U-haul or get a moving company to transport belongings.
Anyone with similar experiences please let me know...

Do not, under any circumstances, get U-Haul.
They are by far one of the worst companies to ever be involved with as I, and at least 4 people I know, have been the victim of the "double-book" in which the truck you were promised was given to someone else.
On top of this, almost 20% of trucks in a 2005 crackdown by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation were found to be un-safe for the roads. W-Five, a CTV investigative reports show, rented 9 trucks from different locations and found that 7 of them failed to meet basic safety guidelines.
However, any other company (Ryder, Hertz, etc.) would be fine as long as they offer one-way moving (i.e. you don't have to return the truck to the location you picked it up from). A move can be a lot of fun for everyone involved (although certainly stressful at times) and you are guaranteed that everything will be moved with the best care since you are the one who is moving it. But also be wary of those you are moving with; cross-country drives could be a death-knell.

Moving company if you can afford it. It is a lot of more money. I have heard a lot of horrible stories about both. If your coming to the west I hope you have a place to live. Calgary is over its limit. Lots of nice smaller communities they are the best. Happy trails....
Oh if its just your family your moving I'd get something comfy. LOL

Ok, just from my own personal moving experiences...which weren't as far apart as you seem to be moving .... get the moving company!! It's soooo worth it!

I'm with Peter on this one, DO NOT GET U-HAUL, .I don't even like driving beside them on the highway, pretty scary stuff, and they will rip you off (double book),

Get a pack-your-own sort of deal.
http://upack.com/ is cheap. I had problems with them, but it looks like a lot of people have not, so...
