Someone later says they make minimum wage. NO THEY DON'T. There term for a server means $2.13/hr... not the $5.25 that is normal minimum wage. It is expected that they will make tips on top of it, so they can pay them a lower wage.
Also, someone said that because of inflation they now pay 20%. Very generous, but consider that if the percentage is from the charges, and the charges go up with inflation, the tip will go up proportionatly as well. So 15 % is still the going rate.
15% tip based on the charges is minimum. It's nice to be more generous for exceptional service, or if you're like me and very demanding. I don't mind being demanding since I know I will be generous. :o)
In a buffet style place, like the Golden Corral where my daughter works, you do not get full service, but they too work for tips. At least $1 per person at the table is sufficient.... more if you leave a bigger mess such as having children who tend to be messier or a large party. They to have to clean the table and floor you know!
My daughter has noticed that the people who leave the biggest messes, and are the meanest and most demanding, often stiff her on the tip, even though she works hard to give great service to everyone. It seems to be that they are just overall inconsiderate of others. I hope no one here does that. Other people are very nice and generous with their tips, and leave things relatively clean. It doesn't make sense that the tip is inversely proportional to the amount of the mess people leave. LOL But it seems that way.
Best Wishes,
Sue

Definitely at least 15-20%, but one thing nobody else has mentioned here is what happens in an inexpensive restaurant. I think there should be some absolute minimum. There's a buffet restaurant I eat at all the time, and a meal and a drink only cost like $7.50, so a 15% tip would be $1.12. But I always leave two or three dollars anyway. A one dollar tip is too little for decent service no matter how cheap the meal was.

Ditto on what everyone said. Remember that if there's a flub with the food not to penalize the server, because chances are it's not his or her fault. They put it into the computer just as you asked, and the kitchen may have got it wrong. Don't tip them less on the kitchen's SNAFU. If you're ill with the food, talk to the manager, chances are you'll get a reduction on the price. If you get a meal half off, then tip the server according to the original price of the meal. If your $10 burger wasn't cooked right and had onions on it when you asked for none, and the manager knocks it down to $5, tip the server on the $10, not the $5. He or she did the best they could to get it out there. Try working in a restraunt for a while and see how hard those people work, and think how you'd feel if you busted your butt to make a table happy, and got $3 on a $50 tab. Put yourself in their shoes.

I think it's 15 to 20% depending on how good the service was. I went to this hair salon where the woman cutting my hair was judging me and my religion and telling me I was wrong, so I didn't leave her a tip or ever go back to that place again. She was rude and disrespectful. Another time, me and my husband went to a restaurant near the harbour in downtown where our waiter was excellent. He came to our table a few times during our meal to make sure we were okay with everything and he was very polite, so we left a generous tip.

At least 15% of the tab, but that is old rules. I try to leave 20% because of inflation. If the service is really good, I will leave 25%.

The rule has been 15% of the tab but I believe 20% is quickly becoming the norm.

At least 15% of the bill. 20% if it's a 4+ star restaurant, or you're with a large group, or the service is great.

if the service was good you should lesve a 15 to 20% gratuity(tip). the service and food quality are seperate entities. if the service/server is crappy-tip accordingly but do take into consideration surrounding cirrcumstances.

It is 15% of the total amount of the bill. However, if the service is
exceptional, you can give much more.
