When my two cats "what seems to be playing," they bat at each other, run for each other, sometimes hiss, and make loud noises. How do you know they're only playing and not fighting? Thanks!

Even one cat stands over the other and at times, it even looks like they're head locking (cat style). It scares me sometimes because I hope they're only playing...

If cats PLAY together even once, they never fight for real ever again, even though they can pretend so well at it that it looks like real fighting. All it takes, though, is just one social engagement of play and they've made some kind of social contract not to kill each other for real. Sounds like your cats are beyond murder and true mayhem.

Usually the noise they make is telling the other to back off and leave well enough along. If they have been together as a pair for along time they know this. I had three at one time. Two of them would play and if you saw them you would think they hated each other and the next thing you knew they would be giving each other bath.

A real cat fight is easily noted becuase it is LOUD! I mean screams and screeches and fur flying and 2 cats locked belly to belly biting neck, clawing face and kicking... you can't miss it.
By your description of what your two cats are doing, sounds like they are playing "mock" battle. Sometimes though, cats doing this can get a bit carried away, so when they get too rowdy, stop the "fight" by squirtung water over them (I used to pour or throw a cup of water over rowdy cat mock fights) - only way to stop cats fighting without you sustaining some injury.

As long as they don't damage each other I wouldn't worry, but it's a fair indication if neither of them is actually running away and hiding permanently it's probably play. Actually cat fights are normally preceded by a great deal of showing, arched backs, raised hackles and some very bad language. If yours are just leaping on each other it's probably a game.

It sounds terrible, but I'd agree with the blood drawn aspect. They'll be alright. There's some territoriality going on there...maybe one is newer than the other? Hopefully, you don't have white carpet. Chances are that they're playing and having one helluva lot of fun. They'll figure out that they're the same species soon enough.

When they play, they only seem a little insane at each other, when they fight, they are full out insane. Psychotic sadistic killers. You'll know when it happens.

When they yowl and hiss then either one is telling the other that he was too rough, or they are starting to fight. =(
If they are quiet, then they are still playing. =)

they are playing, unless claws come out and the fur on the tail stands straight out then no worries they are playing
