In China there is a saying to describe the cities:" If you want to see a city of 2,000 years old, go to Xi'an; a city of 500 years old, go to Beijing; a city of 100 years old, go to Shanghai!'
However, if you go to all three of them, you will get a good look of China's past, presence and future! Obviously Shanghai is the future of China! I have some clients came back from Shanghai told me that "They just built another Manhattan in Shanghai!"
I would normally recommend two days in Shanghai for my clients. In the first day, visit the best Museum in China, Shanghai Museum. You can easily spend half a day there, and then visit the landmark of Shanghai: the Bund! After you wandering on this mile long water front, you can shop on the Nanjing Road. Finish your day with a traditional dim sum dinner and followed by the fantastic feats of the acrobatic show!
The second day, visit the Yu Garden, the real quiet and delicate garden in the middle of the old town. Then try the water town: Zhujiajiao which is an ancient water town several thousand years old filled with historical sites like old rice and oil stores, and ancient bridges. You will see many ancient buildings standing on both sides of the canals with more than 30 old bridges adding to the beauty of this ancient prosperous town. It is like a little Venice. You can enjoy a private boat ride on the canal where you can have some intimacy with this old town.
Then have your farewell dinner at M on the Bund, where you can have the fantastic view as well as the best food in town!

In Shanghai, there are a few places of interest : Yuyuan Garden in the old city, Nanjing Road going to the Bund, the museum, the opera, buildings if you're into architecture. So 2 or 3 days are OK.
but the best would be to take the train for the cities not far from Shanghai : Suzhou, Nanjing, Changzhou. They are more Chinese, meaning Shanghai is more an occidental city now and you won't see the real China.

Shanghai is just a distinguished international area drawing more and more interest from all around the earth; so see what this city is offering with hotelbye . Shanghai is a well known vacation location for visitors. In Shanghai you can see the wonderful Yu Garden (Yù Yuán), also called the Garden of Happiness. This Garden addresses a location in excess of 20,000 square meters and contains an external and an internal garden. The oldest section could be the Outer Garden with further changes being made in the 18th century when Sansui Tang, the park's principal hall, was added. The newer and significantly smaller Inner Garden dates from 1709 and includes characteristics typical of a conventional Chinese writer's Garden: appealing small pavilions, ornamental stones, and little mountain ranges, dividing surfaces and small wetlands, and a good highly designed theatrical stage.
