I have a maltese/poodle mix that was born on October 1st. I took her to my vet for her first shots and to get wormed a few days ago. I told him that she had been having runny bowel movements but he wasn't very concerned because she was active and appeared healthy. Today she had very little appetite and now I notice that she is lethargic and she has an oily substance on her ears. There is also a foul smell and I am quiet concerned because the vets clinic doesn't open for several hours. I would appreciate any help I could get. Is there something I can give her?

To Jmaclover...thanks for all the help (hope you're smart enough to get the sarcasm). Fact is that it is 12:47 am here and I have searched for a clinic that is open in this area and there just aren't any. I would drive the puppy any distance to get her helped but I'm not sure moving her is even the best action. Again thanks :/

Thanks to everyone who has tried to provide quality advice. I am searching for a 24 hour clinic in this area. I regard to one of the answers I did think initially that the puppy was having a reaction to the medication. As far as the ears I have cleaned them and she appears to be comfortable but I am still concerned.

Thank everyone for the kindness. I was really worried. She is spending the night with the vet so he can monitor her condition. The fluids he gave her made a quick improvement but we both want to be cautious at this point. Thanks again!

For now I'd give her pedialite, the liquid that you give children to keep their electrolites up. This will ensure that she is getting enough fluids, and give her a bit of energy until you can get her to the vet in the morning. My puppy became very lathargic on the third day home when she was 8 weeks old, and the breeder told me to give her the pedialite and watch her for any other symptoms. Sure enough, after a day of pedi treatment, she was fine. Good luck, and just keep her in bed with you tonight so you can watch her closely until morning.

Don't take any chances. Find a emergency clinic if you can. Puppies can go down hill very quickly and die in a matter of hours if diarrhea is left untreated. She may very well need IV fluid therapy to rehydrate her. If that is not an option you can try syringing 15-20 cc unflavored pedialyte (Walmart) every 30-45 minutes around the clock until you can get her to the vet clinic first thing in the morning. If she is vomiting too you really have a much bigger problem and the EC is the only place for such a young pup. Good luck.

Where is the foul smell coming from? If her ears, it could be an ear infection. You can clean them gently with a Q-tip or cotton ball (don't stick the Q-tip in too far) to give her some relief.

If her stool is what is smelling foul, there could be a variety of causes. Your vet will need to look at a stool sample under the microscope to see what parasites might be in there, and maybe run some other tests too.

Runny stool in puppies should always be checked out. It could be from parasites (and there are other parasites besides worms that can affect puppies), change of diet, viral or bacterial infections, etc.

Is there an emergency clinic in your area? If so you should give them a call tonight.

Good luck!

Try the yellow pages and see if there is a 24 hour emergency vet near you. If so, go in asap, pups are like babies, & can get dehydrated very quickly. Also, if you vet doesnt have somone on call for emergencies, find a new vet tomorrow. Good luck, I hope your dog is okay!

I too have a maltipoo who was very ill and the first vet didn't catch that she had ghardia. Are you also feeling under the weather? I ask because Ghardia is contagious to humans.
Where is your puppy from? I was in tears one morning when my dog was limp not even lifting her head. One dose of the right medicine and she perked up a bit. Call the Emergency Vet # in your area.

PLEASE UPDATE US ON HER CONDITION. HOPE ALL IS WELL.

I would get a hold of any Animal Emergency Hospital and ask them what to do. I am sure you could find a number on the internete.

Best of Luck!

There isn't much you can do until she is seen by the vet. I would encourage fluids, or even broth to get her to drink plenty. the oily substance is likely to be ear waxes, melted by a fever..

Sometimes when a puppy gets its shots it makes them a little sick just like when people get vaccinations.
