You always see the ambulances in the movies picking up body bags, but I was talking to an ambulance driver that claims this never happens. But maybe that's just his company's policy?

It probably depends on a lot of things...company policy, the size of the town, the specifics of the death...

An ambulance took my grandfather away when he died, so it does happen.

My husband was an ambulance driver here in a major city and in a small town. He says in a big city, it's always the coroner who picks up a dead body, not the ambulance. In a small town, however, sometimes the ambulance has to pick up a dead body if the closest coroner is too far away. We lived an hour away from the nearest coroner, so sometimes it fell to the town's volunteer rescue squad to deal with a dead body.

In CA, usually if someone dies before they get into the ambulance, the medical examiner or coroner is called as well as the police or sheriff, often a homicide detective. After the scene is documented, the medical examiner takes the body back to the morgue, not an ambulance driver.

He is correct. If the patient is dead when the ambulance arrives on scene, then a crime scene is established (depending on the circumstances) and the end result is a coroner or a funeral home picking up the body.

If the patient is alive, or CPR is necessary, then the ambulance will transport. The only time that dead people are in ambulances (usually) is if they die during transport.

Ambulances do NOT pick up dead bodies. Only way would be if the victim died enroute to the hospital. (DOA)
Dead bodies are picked up by the coroner, or if there is none, the funeral home. They are then transported to the morgue or the medical examiners' office, depending on the cause of death (suspicious or natural causes) Usually the justice of the peace determines if an autopsy will be performed.

More often than not-they will call for a hearse. If for some reason-the medics wish to spare the family of a scene-they will transport the body. For instance-mass casualties-they can not leave the body in the street. Some states require that a doctor pronounce a person dead. The body had to be transported before it was declared dead.

Yes, there is no guarantee that you'll ever be alive on this earth.

The only exception is in an ambulance. They are the "Bermuda Triangle" of life on earth.

We take the dead, because the guy that picks them up is slow in my county, and leaving dead guys in public places is not good.
