What kind of TV do you have, and are you satisfied with it? I want to get a 42" HDTV that's in the $1,000 range. Is that even a possibility?

I have a 34" HD Widescreen Sony Wega. I love it. It's amazing.

As for getting a 42" for around $1,000, there are some close to that price range of good quality. Just make sure to avoid "HD-ready" TVs; they're not the same as HDTV and won't give you the same picture and audio quality. And going to a lower-grade brand will also be a sacrifice of quality and, in turn, lifespan, so be aware that spending a little extra for a better brand is a good investment.

The Panasonic (TH-42PD60U) 42" HDTV Plasma TV has gotten decent reviews and retails around $1,200.

And the Sony (KDF-E42A10) 42" Grand Wega LCD Rear Projection HDTV has also gotten very good reviews and has a price tag of around $1,200 as well.

Although you're leaning towards getting a 42", you may want to consider getting something a bit smaller. And note that TVs always look bigger in your room than they do in the store. Also note that you don't want to sit too close to the screen as you'll lose picture quality.

Here's a guide for choosing size:
20 - 27 inch screen needs 2.5 - 5 feet.
32 - 37 inch screen needs 6 - 8 feet.
42 - 46 inch screen needs 10 - 14 feet.

If a smaller size would be a better choice for the size room you plan to put it in, with your budget, that would greatly increase your options.

HDTV's are excellent. If you surf around the web you'll find great deals considering the price of HDTV's are dropping in price very fast.
1080p is the lastest resolution of TV's on the market so I would recommend in purchasing one of those as to a 720p. But both have a great picture.
Just make sure your television has a NATIVE resolution of 1080p or 720p some HDTV's are not.
