I live 4 hrs. away from my parents. Christmas is coming & my Mom has to work on that day, unfortunately. I begged her to ask for a vacation or a day-off on that day but it seemed like she rather work that day then to spend it with her immediate family. I hate the fact that she is a workaholic & her job has always been her number 1 priority.

Maybe your mom can't get the day off. But Christmas Eve is on a Sunday this year. Could you make the trip to see her and spend Christmas Eve with her? Sometimes it's easier for the younger family members to do the traveling unless you have very young children of your own.

Your parents may have other concerns, that you are unaware of, that may make it difficult for them to travel for Christmas. This is a tough time financially for many families. They may even have work commitments that make it difficult too. If I were you I would just ask my parents if it was possible for you to spend some time with your cousins; perhaps you could travel by train, etc. if possible, under some supervision and be met at the end of the journey. You can only ask. If that is not possible perhaps a cousin or two could visit your family. Don't be too concerned about your parents not being as close lately; most marriages go through tough periods. Try to be as helpful and mature as you can as that may help take some pressure off them. If things are so difficult between them at present they may even enjoy some quiet time together without their children. Hope it works out so you can spend some time with your cousins.

How about letting her work and you going to see her on Christmas Eve or around that time instead. Does she need the money? Maybe that is why she is working. Maybe she can't get the day off. This is my opinion. Hope it all works out for you. Hope your Christmas is good.
