She developed a cough about a week after we moved into a new house and it's been since August. She is 15 months old. It gets better and then worse but it has never completly gone away. We don't have insurance and can't afford to take her to the doctor. I think it is just allergies, the previous owners didn't take care of the carpet and had a dog and cat. There has also been a little mold found. Could it just be allergies? We will be moving soon because of this. How long before it gets out of her system, when we move? I want to take her to the doctor but I don't really know if it's necessary since we will be getting out of this enviornment within the next week. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

My daughter has asthma and we moved in with my grandfather in another state and she got really sick. Your baby is probably allergic to something in the house. Get a air purifier replace the carpets and vacuum really good. As for the mold get a spray bottle and fill it with bleach and water. Spray that on the mold. That will kill the mold. Whatever you do do not get a humidifer. That will increase the mold. Make sure you air the house out really good. You also may want to check the paint to make sure there is no lead in it. You can usually tell because the paint in the house will chip. I believe that if you fix these problems you can save on moving. Then find a low cost clinic that goes by your income or you can so to the state office. I know that it can be embarrassing but they have to provide insurance for your baby.

If you need any other suggestions if this is not working you can email me and I would be glad to help you.

Get rid of the carpet. Put down VCT tiles, they are cheap and easy to keep clean. Remove all Curtains and rugs. Use plastic blinds instead.

Mold is a huge issue. You need to completely remove mold, and the chemicals involved may make baby even sicker.

I would definitely have a professional look at both the baby and the house. When mold allergies effect the lungs, they can be quite dangerous. Talk to your Pediatrician right away about this situation.

Tell him/her everything you have told us here.

In the meantime, keep baby in a room with no water source, no rug, or carpet,

Never say "just allergies" allergies can be life threatening. My mold allergy caused me to have giant hives off and on for 7 years, before I discovered what was causing it. I had emergency treatment repeatedly to insure my airways remained open.

Yes she should be seen, any infant with a respritory problem needs to be seen right away.

Call a Doc and tell em you will have to pay them over time, find a doc and stop putting this off.

I understand your concern. You definitely need to get your daughter out of that environment. Once you move, if it is allergy related, it should clear up rather quickly. This is a serious thing, and could lead to future health problems for your daughter. In the week until you move, try to get as much fresh air into the house as possible. Open windows, and take your daughter outside during the day. If it doesn't clear up within a few days of moving, then I would find a way to see the doctor. You can go to a local health clinic for a reduced price, or for free.

Good luck with your little girl.

First, it might very well be the dust and your carpet. Are you sure you have a GOOD vacuum cleaner that sucks up all the dust in the carpet regularly?

Second, you should use wet cloth to wipe fuirniture etc. regularly to remove dust.

Third, check daughter's bed (hey she spends 8 hours a day on that place!!) Did you wash the sheet regularly?

Last, it might well be the mold. Do you know mold could be VERY toxic to health? Use chlorine water to remove the mold ASAP. Be careful when you remove them, because you might inadvertently release some of the spores into the air during the process.

And congrats you're moving out soon

Is she crawling around on the dirty carpet? She could be allergic to pet hair. Is it a dry cough, or a deeper wet sounding cough? If the landlord didn't properly clean the unit, particularly the carpet, before you moved in, you might be able to bill him for any damages, ie, the doctor, as a result. You should be able to access free health care for your daughter through your local county health services. Mold can cause issues like you described also. She also just might have an infection, such as bronchitis, either way, try to get her to a doctor soon. I am assuming you are in the US. Look in your phone book under County Health services. They should be able to direct you with further assistance. Good Luck.

It could be allergies but it could be the mold. My cousin and her husband moved into a house that had mold in it and their daughter ( she was one at the time) still suffers (5 now) from the effects of being in that house. They were only there 6 months but it's very dangerous. I'll pray for you that she's simply allergic to the animals.
Have you taken her to the doctor and asked them. You don't say if you bought or are renting. My cousin rented, the landlord knew and they are suing him for all of their daughters bills and compensation. Have your baby checked.

Every state has health benefits for uninsured children...Don't let anyone tell you different. Your child is suffering from severe allergies, and this is affecting her lungs a great deal from what your saying. Call your local/county/states child health care office. and they can set up an appointment with benefits each month for your child, and other children if you have them...In the meantime give her a cough medicine that the 'PHARMACIST' says is OK until you see your Doctor. I would trust his opinion, once you tell him the Age/Symptoms of the cough...Good luck

If it's been going on for months why are you suddenly so worried? If you leave and it doesn't get better then go immediately to the doctor. She should not have been allowed to have a cough for that long with out having it checked. That's just being negligent.
