A love spell can work. The results can be positive or negative depending on whether the spell is manipulative or not.
Very seldom do I ever give out spells. If one has experience and knows how to work magic, they generally can write their own spells. With close friends, we may discuss various elements of spells, but there is no need to give a spell out in it's entirety. I feel it would be unethical for me to give a spell to someone who is not experienced enough to know how to use it properly. If pressed by someone inexperienced in spellwork, I may start at the basics and explain things like grounding, centering, and shielding---and usually, since they aren't getting the instant gratification they were looking for, they will commonly lose interest quickly.

A love spell would be challenging someones free will, and that is not acceptable! If someone wants a love spell I simply tell them to be the kind of person that someone else would be interested in. Love spells do work, but all to often they backfire. I learned that the hard way when I first began doing spells! So you were right in your statement at the end "get them to work on themselves". It does not take magick to do that, and if people are meant to be together, they will be.

The only spells I do are ones which will make the seeker more attractive to the person he or she desires. I don't do spells to try to bend the will of an unwilling party.
Often times, part of being a witch is also part counselor. Guiding a person to their goals is a large part of the work.
Remember the definition of a witch... one who uses natural and supernatural forces to effect some desired outcome. This doesn't always mean magic or Magick. Often, common sense is just as effective a tool.

In my mind, a spell works partly by changing the outlook of the person its cast for. So yes, I might cast a spell, but it would be like something to help them be more receptive to love, and I would incorporate in the spellcraft things to help them work on themselves.

I do not give out love spells, and i do not write love spells.
these type of spells infringe on the free will of the person it is gact on. and therefore is against my beliefs.
i will write spells to bring positive things into someone's life and i will preform the spell for them. i do not give or show my writeings to anyone for any reason. all of my spells and rituals go into one of my spell books. everything that i cast is recorded in there.
furthermore i do not do these things for just anyone. there needs to be a real need for the spell to be cast. and i would never think of cahrging for such a service. it is given freely to thoes that need it.

"Blessed be, three times three,
And harm it none, so mote it"
The most important one here is "harm it none".
If you are forcing someone to love, I think that's bad. Don't you?
