I have long (waist length) --very straight hair. I have a couple of friends with hair the same length that have had perms. Their perms have almost completely fallen out, but they can still gel their hair and get that scrunchy, crinkly look. My hair is really thin, and I have been told that I should NOT get a perm. Is there a way that I can achieve this look with no perm?

With fine straight hair you probably should not get a perm. What you can try if you want loose wavy curls is wait till your hair is pretty dry, apply a light amount of your choice of spray gel, then wrap sections of it in spiral curls, if your are really good at curling try rag curls. You will have to leave the "curlers" in your hair until it is completely dry. Before removing them spray entire head lightly with your choice of hair spray. After removing them turn head upside down and once again a light spray. Run your fingers through your hair to lightly break up the curls. Scrunch the curls from your ends up. If you take your time and let your hair completely dry you should have at least body in your hair for a few days. The smaller the section the tighter the curl. Your friends can still get curls out of their perms because they still have the body from it. The weight of long hair pulls down on hair and straightens it out, so when they scrunch it up they help lock the curl back in. Good Luck

Don't use any heavy products and don't use a conditioner, use a spray and leave on product called "Instacure" in the essential line of Matrix products.

Then comb out with a wide tooth comb. Never brush your hair when wet. It's at its weakest state when wet.

Put in some type of gel that you like, but make sure it is evenly distributed from scalp to ends. Then use a diffuser on your blow dryer and bend your head upside down. Sit down if you have to cause it may take awhile for it to dry. Using your free hand start scrunching your hair at the scalp and work your way to the ends. You can flip your head back over when you are about half way down the length of your hair. Just make sure the hair next to the scalp and part way down are really dry. You'll get some good volume that way. You might want to hairspray a little as you are drying, but not alot. Keep cupping and scrunching until it is dry. Lift hair up and hairspray in-between to get some volume also.

I hope this helps you. Good luck and God bless.

I too have long long hair...but mine is backwards...it's curly and scrunchy and everything else and I always try to make it dead straight...wanna switch? JK ..Try washing it but only condition the very ends (washing strips and bit of buildup and natural oils that can help bend the hair) Then the second day apply garnier fructis mousse, gel and hair spray-apply the mousse and gel and keep scrunching it...If it''s long like mine keep it wrapped up really messy in a tight bun until it's almost dry again..the flip it upside down and scrunch away with more hairspray-u can also use a a blow drier to help....good luck

PS>>>natural gel, mousse, hairspray, perm free hair is the best

If you can find a spray hair gel that you like, when you get out of the shower and your hair is still very damp, spray in the gel and then crumple your hair in your hands a whole bunch. It will crinkle your hair the way you like and once the gel dries it will stay that way. Naturals makes an awesome spray gel in a dark green bottle. It's what I use to crumple mine as perms are too expensive.

I would not get a perm...the best thing to use is a roller iron. It looks like 2 curling irons side by side. All you do is separate a section of hair and start at the top. Put the iron on the hair and open and move down to the end of each section. It is sold at Walgreens if you have one by you.

It will probably not be as curly as a perm, but this is what I do to get my non-permed hair to scrunch.

1. Wash your hair.
2. Do not condition. If you MUST condition, rinse it out completely.
3. DO NOT BRUSH! Wide-tooth comb knots if you must.
4. Spray on one of those curling sprays. (You can get them at Target or Walmart. Hair spray works too, but not as well.) Scrunch with your hands.
5. DO NOT BRUSH!
6. Air dry.

Once it is dry, hairspray hairspray hairspray!

Good luck!

This takes some work but looks awsum on straight hair! Okay so here's wut u do.... at night, after getting out of the shower, put mousse in ur hair.... then sleep with curlers in your hair (the smaller the better) when u wake up, remove the curlers and seperate the curls with ur fingers. Then, using Garnier Surf Hair in the green spray bottle or Curls Up! by Hair FX, spray ur hair heavily and use ur hands to scrunch handfuls of ur hair up towards the top of ur head. Ur good to go!

Well the way I do it is by getting my hair wet and then using my hands to scrunch my hair and then I put hair spray to make it stay.

use an electric hair crimper...it works much like a curling iron only gives the "crimp/scrunchy" effect
