Go for it! There's nothing wrong with that. If he's interested then that's what matters. He doesn't have to speak in full sentences to take a stunning photo. He might have fun taking pictures of interesting insects he sees outside. I saw a news article recently where a little boy (I think he might have also been 3, maybe 4 years old I can't remember) took a photo of a bird he saw in his backyard, and it ended up to be some rare bird! Maybe he'll be a famous photographer one day!

If he really enjoys it and does it a lot a kid camera is an excellent idea. He might grow up to be a photographer or invent the technology that replaces it. I think it is appropriate, it gets him away from in front of the tv or computer screen, and gets him out and about.

I wouldn't buy a new one specifically for a 3 year old, but if I had an old camera and wanted an excuse to upgrade to a brand one and didn't care if the old one got beat up then yes, it would be a good excuse to get a fancy new one for yourself and let your 3 year knock the old one around and maybe learn how to use it in the process.

I don't know I was thinking about getting my daughter a camera also. I would just make sure it is a digital camera so his parents can develop the good pictures and not waste money on the bad ones.

You could go for one of those Fisher-Price cameras that's made for pre-schoolers, if you can find one. The digitals are great, because they can take a million lousy pictures and you don't have to pay for them. I wasted a ton of my dad's polaroid film when I was little.

If you don't want to spend that cash, or if you're not sure he's ready, you can always get him some disposables to play with.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all!
try one of those toy digital cameras, they are <$50 and take low res pics (like 1 MP) but the kid will be enthralled with it. (given that the parents have a computer.) I think it's a great idea!

How about an inexpensive disposable camera? Would that be an option? They use it to take about 27 pictures and it's done. That would be a good way for the you, the parents and everyone to see if he's ready for one that's more pricey.

I bought my 3 year old niece the Hello Kitty Camera for her 3rd birthday. She loves it! Now they came out with the Fisher Price camera that I would really like to get my son. Unfortunately I bought him his birthday & holiday presents already.

It is a GREAT idea. Children have such a vivid imagination and they see things through a camera that most adults will never see. So go on and buy the camera, i can bet you will have wonderful pictures!!!
